WHATEVER WORKS is a movie you probably never have heard of. You will not have seen and never will. And that actually makes me sad, because WHATEVER WORKS brings the viewer an entertaining way on how to live life and how to deal with everyday issues.

Boris Yellnikoff, played by Larry David, can be described as one of those old people who like to complain about everything. His ideologies often do not match when it comes to religion, relationships or other random things. Boris likes to impress others or convince them his point of view is in fact the only correct one.
He lived his entire life in New York and will complain about almost every aspects of life towards every other character in the movie. At times he even complains at the audience! The latter being a nice touch I have to admit.

It is when Melodie St. Ann Celestine – the lovely Even Rachel Wood – enters his life and he eventually allows her to stay at his apartment. His odd view on life and reasoning sparks the love of Melodie and they fall in love. Things go really awkward when both the father and the mother of Melodie show up, trying to take her back home. They however continue their own lives, which result in nice twists and turns in the story. Some keywords are gay, orgies and adultery. Sounds nice huh? But the movie is not about previous mentioned things. It is how people should actually try to make the best out of everything and out of every situation.

So when you are in for a different view on life, have the need to take a step back from things, then this movie will be your cup of tea. Because when it comes to life, Boris motto “whatever works” is indeed a perspective I can support.

When Sneaky and myself wanted to see one of the early screenings of SHERLOCK HOLMES it seemed all seats were taken. Nothing new here of course, because early screenings are always sold out when it comes to “big” movies. But with this case we tried to get some seats that were reserved by others. The system failed on us and the seats could not be given to anyone else.
So to actually get into the screening we decided to get tickets for another movie. We got past the checkpoints and we snuck to the seats we knew weren’t sold. We kept a close watch on the guards making sure that if we were compromised, we could get the hell out of there asap! But a few minutes into the movie, we realized our mission to watch Robert Downey Jr. was a success. Now if only the movie was a success as well…

SHERLOCK HOLMES is based on the original stories of our famous detective – No shit Sherlock… – only this time Guy Ritchie thought he would give a spin to it. Originally he was planning to shoot this movie from a BATMAN BEGINS point of view, showing the early years of Sherlock. Though at first he thought Downey would be too old, casting him convinced him otherwise. They changed a few things and SHERLOCK HOLMES tells the story from an older point of view.

But the movie starts with a nice action scene where Sherlock puts down a couple of guys with careful planning. A nice touch, which will be used so now and then throughout the movie. With help from Watson they stop Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong) performing a sacrificial ritual. Blackwood gets arrested and is sentenced for the gallows.

After the arrest of Lord Blackwood, Sherlock has no more cases to work on and Watson is preparing for his new life with his fiancée Mary Morstan (Kelly Reilly). It is when things get shuck up when the hot Rachel McAdams enters the scene. Miss McAdems plays the role of the one love of Sherlock, Irene Adler. She eventually “convinces” him to investigate the death of someone called Reordan.
In the meanwhile Lord Blackwood seems to have returned from the dead after his hanging. And as Sneaky would say at this point: “The plot thickens!”. The audience now has to keep track of Lord Blackwood and his evil doings and the hot Irene. We all know which gets our attention right?

The storylines eventually meet and Lord Blackwood reveals to be not as mysterious as he tries to appear. He is just an average evil bloke trying to seize control over Britain. Irene is just another hag with a hidden agenda. So in the end the movie is just a Scooby Dooby Doo flick with a couple of loose ends. The various mysteries get solved and everything is well.

So what does this movie bring us comparing it to other crime solving mysteries? Well you have a nice presentation of an old Sherlock Holmes portrayed by Robert Downey. I must say that Guy Ritchie did cast the others quite well and their acting was not that bad. Though Jude Law made my butt cheeks clench at times. At least he is better than Russell Crowe, who originally was thought to play this role.
Mark Strong however did an excellent job as playing the bad guy. The scenes with Downey especially are done very well, for example the prison scene where they talk with each other right before Blackwood gets hanged.

I have to be honest here – even though I am a big Robert Downey Jr. fan – the movie itself is not really something special. There are some great scenes, especially the ones with the “careful planned out ass kickin’” and the dialogue is not that bad either. But some things really should have been done differently, for example the climax scene on top of an unfinished Tower Bridge. It looks nice, but it really felt out of place, comparing it with the rest of the movie. Or perhaps it is just because the special effects in this scene are subpar.

However the movie as a total is quite decent, especially when you are looking at the other recent releases which are currently showing, like AVATAR and UP IN THE AIR. With SHERLOCK HOLMES you are watching something quite entertaining and do I dare to say, refreshing?

When a friend told me about AVATAR I told him I heard about it, but wasn’t planning on seeing it premiere day. Fortune however wanted me to see this movie and when I got off from work a little bit earlier, I decided to go and watch it. New movies are best seen on their first day right?

AVATAR (in 3D!) James Cameron latest work is currently being praised into the Heavens and I could not understand that. Yes he brought us some great movies like TITANIC and TERMINATOR. But when the name Avatar comes to my mind, I always think of the bloke below.

The movie has generated a lot of buzz and the hype is immense. I however only saw 1 or 2 trailers and wasn’t impressed. When I finally went to see it, only 10% of the theater was filled with people. “How could this movie be so hyped?”, well all I could do was to put on those ugly 3D Glasses, sit back and enjoy the ride.

After almost 3 hours – yes this movie is very, very long – I got out with more headache than when I went in. The ride you get when watching AVATAR in 3D is detailed, fast and really intense. But let us talk story first.

AVATAR tells the story of Jake Sully, played by the rather unknown actor – for me at least – Sam Worthington. Jake is a marine who got injured in combat and now cannot walk. His twin brother however died doing research on Pandora. So Jake gets an offer to fill the void his brother left.
The research focuses on the various life forms on Pandora and on making contact with the locals called the Na`Vi. This research is being led by none other than Sigourney Weaver, playing Dr. Grace Augustine.
The underlying reason behind the research however, is to gather a very rare and expensive mineral. Jake Sully gets in contact with the Na`Vi and one of them, Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) gets the assignment to train him. Of course they fall in love and when push comes to shove, Jake has to decide to either fight for the greedy military corporation or for the Na`Vi. I do not have to tell you how things will end, because every sane human being will know how it ends.

Somehow I cannot understand why this specific story took so long for James Cameron to realize. Sure the effects are very nice, but the story itself is really thin and unoriginal. Heck I think any 6 year old could have come up with it. But the story should not be the reason to go and watch this at your local cinema. What makes this $500 million dollar movie “worthwhile” are the effects in 3D. Imagine being a bird or some other small creature, constantly following the various characters in the movie, seeing rain fall or bushes passing you by. The vast amount of details being put into the animated parts is what sets this movie apart from others. You sometimes have to realize that everything you see is computer generated. None of it is real, but it is presented to you as if it is. Of course the great music in the background helps as well, but in my honest opinion this is the only true reason to go watch it on the big screen.

The acting of the “real” characters is average, the story is cliché as hell, but when you are watching the movie you tend to forget all these flaws. I got to hand that to James, he did a great job keeping the audience focused, due to its sheer beauty.

When finally the ending credits appeared I realized why the movie cost this much. They actually showed the credits both horizontally and vertically, else you would be sitting another hour just watching all the names of the people, who worked on it. But where all these people required for this movie? Was the entire $500 million well spent? Or was this movie created just to break records? These last questions I cannot answer. Costs aside though, James Cameron brought us an impressive graphical feast and only this hype has been truly realized. Everyone who has seen this movie will say that AVATAR currently holds the record for best visual effects and perhaps best animated movie. And the headache? Well it was worth the ride…

Those of you who follow my Twitter will know that I watch more movies than I am able to write about (this is a silent hint to follow me). I still got some on the drawing board like Disney’s UP and Woody Allen’s WHATEVER WORKS, but my latest movie was so awful, I just had to put aside the more decent movies for this abomination. The movie in question NEW MOON, part 2 of The Twilight Saga, with TWILIGHT being the first one which was released last year and on DVD a couple of weeks ago.

Some people do not know it, but The Twilight Saga is based on the 4 novels from Stephenie Meyer. They apparently were a great success, because last year the first book was released on the white screen.

The Twilight Saga tells the story of Bella Swan, played by Kristen Stewart, who falls in love with a vampire. The vampire in question; Edward Cullen, played by Robert Pattinson, you know the guy who dies in HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE. Of course having a relationship with a vampire brings complications, like him being nocturnal, stuff like bloodlust, direct sunlight and him not being able to cross water and all. But with these series all those vampirish issues all vanished and the genre became “just another romantic drama movie”.

NEW MOON continues the love story of Bella and Edward, when Edward eventually decides to leave her. He believes she will be in danger if she stays around him and his family so one day he is gone. Bella is heartbroken and eventually finds comfort in her friend Jacob Black (the new MTV hunk Taylor Lautner). Jacob helps Bella deal with her loss, when suddenly also Jacob wants distance in their relationship. After a little while Bella finds out why, Jacob is a werewolf the archenemies of vampires. Seriously why do women always fall for the mysterious and dangerous types?

Just when Jacob is about to lick like Lassie, Alice (Edward’s sister) returns to warn Bella. Edward dearest apparently is going to the Volturi in Italy to have himself killed. He strongly believes Bella already is dead so he wants to join her. Now isn’t that cute? Sounds like Romeo & Juliet doesn’t it? Bella stops Edward and they somehow manage to delude the Volturi and head back home to Forks. Edward promises he will never leave Bella and Jacob – the horny dog he is – basically does the same. The treaty the vampires and werewolves currently have, will certainly be influenced, all this because of a woman / girl / the evil gender.

I thought the whole classic drama stories were gone, but The Twilight Saga somehow shows it is still possible, not believable, but possible to some extent. But this is not what actually ruins the movie. Since my early childhood years I have been a fan of vampire stories, so I am one of those people who dislike the way NEW MOON (and TWILIGHT) is being shown.

No vampires do not shine like diamonds when sunlight hits them, they frickin’ burn (to death).

Vampires cannot swim, they cannot cross oceans! The have to be carried over (for example by hiding on a ship in their casket).

Werewolves need a moon to change and if I stand correctly, they need a full moon. With NEW MOON we get to see Jacob and the gang shape shift as if they are part of a new Marvel series. I cannot recall even seeing a moon in this movie.

And the list goes on…

Having this many flaws compared to the old (ancient) vampire stories, The Twilight Saga does not feel true to its genre. You are basically watching a love story with some “additions”. The above mentioned flaws could be overlooked if the acting was decent, but alas even this is not the case. At times I just had shivers down my spine, not because of the scare factor – not even one scary moment in the entire movie – but due to bad acting and the dialogue.

Example:
Edward Cullen: You promised you wouldn’t do anything stupid or reckless.
Bella Swan: You promised it would be as if you never existed. You lied.

Or:
Bella Swan: Jasper… No fair with the mood control thing.
Jasper Whitlock: [smiles] Sorry Bella… Happy uh… Nevermind… Really?

The last one is even more confusing, since Bella is supposed to be immune to the “extra” vampire powers each one of them have. And when did vampires even have all these extra powers? Do they not have enough strengths already? O wait I forgot, the series are not true to the classic version of a vampire.

I think you are getting my drift why this movie – or better yet the entire series – should be avoided. I can only think of one reason to actually go and watch it; if you got the hots for Robert Pattinson or Taylor Lautner (or both if that is your thing). You will get to see them bare-chested and decently buffed. So the true question is; do you like pale hotties or nicely coloured ones?

After THE LORD OF THE RINGS and KING KONG we haven’t seen much from Peter Jackson. But with DISTRICT 9 we get glimpse of what he is capable of when producing even the weirdest of stories. DISTRICT 9 really is that, a weird story with an even weirder ending. The movie is already released on DVD even though some cinemas in Europe are still showing it. So watch in cinema, DVD or wait for the TV screening? Go ahead and read on, beware of the big fat spoiler at the end of this review!

DISTRICT 9 tells the story of “The Prawns” an alien force which appeared over Johannesburg, South Africa in the year 1990. They are welcomed with great expectations, but twenty years later, they have become a pain in the arse for the government and local citizens. A refugee camp has been created underneath the mother ship and all the aliens are forced to live there under strict militarized surveillance. One of the hidden agenda points however is to learn as much from these overgrown shrimps with legs and arms and to be even more specific, to learn how to use their advanced weaponry. Nothing new there pretty much your basic aliens movie. But things are finally getting out of hand, so in 2010 a munitions corporation, Multi-National United, is contracted to move the Prawns from District 9 to another “new and better” district. In charge; Wikus van der Merve, played by Sharlto Copley.

Just to state for the record, Wikus rocks because he has an almost Dutch like last name and Dutch people rule.

So the above mentioned part of the story takes place in the first half of the movie. This part is being told quite originally, but you lose the focus during this section because it is boring. Sure aliens are interesting and all, but if you make them look like a bunch of rabid dogs and nothing special happens, these first 30 or so minutes are quite bland. But after these 30 minutes, the movie gets interesting!

The Prawns have a certain hierarchy when it comes to leaders and workers. During the relocation of them, they stumble upon a couple of those leaders. The MNU realise this and immediately start investigation, because their cottage has loads of weapons and other technology. During this search Wikus gets sprayed with some kind of fluid and this is the part things become interesting. This black semen causes Wikus to change bit by bit. First his flesh starts to fall off, then his hand mutates to a hand similar to that of the Prawns and the moment MNU discovers this, Wikus becomes a target. The more knowledgeable Sci-Fi geek already realises that Wikus is now capable of using alien weaponry, something nobody was able to do before.

Wikus finally finds aid from one of the leaders (the place where he found the bottled semen). In return the leader Prawn will help him to return human again, so Wikus can be with his wife once more. What does he have to do? Get back the bottle of semen! Ok I just realised I said semen a bit too much, but be honest; it is what it is right? It creates Prawns!

The fluid actually is a highly concentrated energy source, which will allow the Prawns to go back to their home planet. In the final scene the leader, his kid and Wikus almost make it to the ship. In a brave and cliché moment Wikus sacrifices himself for the leader. The leader manages to get aboard the mother ship and promises Wikus he will one day return to make him human again. But there is a weird catch; Wikus has to wait three (!!!) years for him to return. The leader only escapes with his kid and leaves him and the other Prawns behind.

This ending leaves us with a bunch of questions. The most important one being, will there be a sequel? One can only assume with such an ending, but I am convinced this is how the movie is supposed to end and it is a refreshing one.

So cinema, DVD or TV screening? Well there are a bunch of nice special effects in this movie, but this will not suffice the admission price of a ticket. My suggestion would be to either rent it, when you want to watch a Sci-Fi which brings the genre something different, or catch it on TV.

Michael Jackon’s THIS IS IT shows the last couple of months before his demise. You get to see what he was planning to show all of us and what surprises he had stored for the fans. Besides fragments of his show, people whom he worked with are being interviewed as well.

So is this really it? Can we close the story that is Michael Jackson with this movie, or do we feel something is still missing and another chapter is still required?

THIS IS IT follows the cast & crew of the show with all their rehearsals and other technical features. You will get to see what kind of perfectionist Michael really is and how he keeps pushing himself beyond limits. If things aren’t going the way he wants, he will say it and make everyone do it again.

But THIS IS IT also shows you his more gentle side (for those who did not know he had it). He respects everyone on the stage for what they are and will ask things politely. MJ is also treated as such by the producer and other people whom are working with him. The group together, working on this production just looks like a big family which will give you tears, knowing that such an artist isn’t among us anymore.

In the press fan clubs have been saying that THIS IS IT does not capture the real Michael Jackson and the pain he has been going through, but I say they are wrong. If you look closely during this movie, you will see him grabbing his right wrists at times or his stomach when he has pain. Also other type of movements can been seen, which are associated with pain. People with similar pains will recognise those movements quite easily. So to simply say “the presentation of Michael is wrong” has been exaggerated.

However what the movie does show is, what kind of entertainer Michael truly is and how hard he works to bring the fans something new and special. Did you know that he reshot most of his music videos just for these concerts? They redid “They don’t care about us” on the green screen so the couple dancers were multiplied times thousands. They even redid “Thriller” with 3D Technology. I can only assume that the audience would receive 3D Glasses, which of course would create the effect of the monsters coming out of the screen. Besides this 3D effect they created special ghosts which would fly through the stadium.

It is mindboggling to see the things he had planned. As some of you might know MJ always did something unique and with THIS IS IT he aimed for unique times two. What am I saying, unique times one hundred! Yes I am a fan and it is a shame he did not end his career how he planned it. I am aware that in recent times he hardly brought us anything new, but his legacy could be seen in many R&B artist today like Usher, Ne-Yo or Chris Brown. With his passing this legacy will only be enhanced and looking at THIS IS IT, I am quite sure it will inspire only more artists to be.

*TJING* or whatever that effect sounds like when our favorite X-Men pulls out his claws. This sound has become a thing my girlfriend apparently has the hots for, because when we watched this movie I told her about X-MEN 1 to 3. The next few days she just had to see her hairy friend Hugh Jackman playing the one and only Wolverine.

This is another short review, as the movie is almost ready for a DVD release. In some countries you might be able to catch it in the cinemas and if you have not done so, I would seriously suggest you do. The movie isn’t great or anything, but it is an action flick which can only be fully enjoyed on the big screen. Of course if you are an X-Men fan, you will probably have seen it. So any good?

First I want to state that it really annoyed me the claws of Wolverine were CGI effects instead of proper movie props like used in X-Men 1,2 and 3. I think it even annoys me |—–| much that this short review will be effected by it.

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE tells the story of kiddy Logan growing up to the Wolverine that he is. I do not know much about his childhood story, but I do know the comics and original animated series a bit. From what I know, I can honestly say the story has been translated “decently”. Of course there were some things that upset most of the fans, for example:

The actor used for the brother (Sabretooth) is now being played by Liev Schreiber, instead of Tyler Mane who played the part in X-MEN.

Also Deadpool, the specially created combined super mutant evil awesome overkill dude, gets up and dies within 10 minutes. It even pissed off this many fans, that Deadpool is now getting his own movie. Do not get me wrong, I really love Ryan Reynolds. He is one of my favorite actors, but personally I do not think it is worth it to give Deadpool his own movie, since he is really not that well known in the X-Men Universe… but we will judge that when the move gets released in 2011.

So back to the movie. As mentioned there are some points which many fans will not like, but for me it felt “believable”. Of course some points annoyed me as well, but this is what you get when people try to make a movie out of big stories lots of people know. Like the new Harry Potter movie currently in cinemas, the opinions on those are mixed as well. Of course you cannot expect that every movie adaptation is done properly, like 300, THE WATCHMEN or THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. But as some know even concessions were made with the previous mentioned titles.

If you are going to watch X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE expect minor details which you will probably dislike, but overall you will be watching a decent X-Men movie. For those people who always walk out during credits, try to stick around for a nice little extra.

Second in line is the great movie THE WATCHMEN. THE WATCHMEN is a movie based on a twelve-issue comic book series created by writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins. It has been published by DC Comics in 1986 and 1987, but I never knew this or heard a thing about it, so when I went to watch THE WATCHMEN, I went in unprepared and unbiased…

The movie takes place somewhere during the cold war. We get to know some of the characters one of them being Dr. Manhattan. Dr. Manhattan is the only real superhero with superpowers in the movie. He can teleport, create objects, duplicate himself, is telepathic and has telekinetic powers and I am quite sure I am missing lots of other things he can do as well. All the other characters like Nite Owl, The Comedian, Silk Spectre, Rorschach and Ozymandias are not real superheroes. Yes they can kick butt, but they can be best compared to Batman. Some of them have gadgets, others have great weapons and some of them can just kick arse.

The reason why they took a superhero identity was to fight crime. How often have you not watched television and saw a murderer sentenced some psychic treatment and then released back in society. Or a pedophile only getting a sentence of cleaning the curbs. Does that not piss you off? A group of people agreed on this and created their own club to fight crime, only this time the evildoers would not get far. This is actually the essence of THE WATCHMEN and it took me some time to figure this out, since I was expecting something more in the lines of the X-Men. Nonetheless after understanding this, the story itself is awsome yet quite simple.

Someone is killing the group members one by one and the only question now is “who?”. All the heroes have retired because their “vigilantic” behavior was frowned upon and a law was passed so it was now forbidden. Only Dr. Manhattan still uses his power to aid the US Government in their fight during the cold war.

I have been told that the story of THE WATCMEN is complex, but they have made it a lot easier and cut out subplots and other details just for the movie. According to sneaky they have managed to stick true to the story, but removed quite a lot. As expected you are watching a dumbed down version of the comic book series, but I did not miss anything. I was able to follow the story and enjoyed all the different characters. The movie is quite long – 162 minutes, the directors cut will be 186 minutes – but it is being told quite fluently. The narrator throughout most of the movie is Rorschach who is investigating the murder of The Comedian. He eventually contacts the other heroes of the group and warns them that they are next. Eventually the group finds out that one of them is actually the one responsible for the killing only to find out it is too late. Dr. Manhattan steps in and all comes to an end.

I specifically did not say whether it is a good or bad end, because opinions on this topic are divided. I quite enjoyed it and loved the little details this movie had. When this gets released on DVD it will be an instant buy and I am quite sure I will watch the movie several times, just to make sure to get every detail hidden in the beautiful scenes it has. So in the end I will be watching THE WATCHMEN quite often…

Ok ok… some might have noticed updates are not happening as frequently as we are aiming with criticasm. But going to do short version of so me of the latest flicks I have seen. First up MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D.

MY BLOODY VALENTINE is a horror / slasher movie. The reason why you are watching it is not for the great story or the acting, but for the great kills the evil dude is performing. And what better way to enjoy this then in 3D right?

This exactly how I walked out of the theatres when the movie was done. At times the movie was suppose to be really scary but everyone in the audience were laughing out loud because we saw a jaw of a victim being flung through the movie room or you duck under your chair because the killer swung his axe pick right at you. The story is about a guy, which kills… how surprising. It is said that local authorities took care of him, but some years later he is back, killing a group of young teenagers partying at a local mineshaft. Really, mineshafts are the new clubs these days. Some teenagers survive this massacre and just when you thought things were back to normal… the killing starts… again… for the third time…

So is this movie something to see? Sure why not, but do not expect anything special. The acting is that compared with FINAL DESTINATION series or SCREAM. What did surprise me was the plot ending, but according to some of my friends, I just overlooked some details from which you can guess who the killer is, but I was too busy with the special effects of the various very original murders.

The movie is currently rated as being average and I can agree with this. But if you do get a chance to see it with the 3D-effects and you are a fan of movies like FRIDAY THE 13TH or SCREAM then go for it. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing a severed head flying right at you. Be warned the storyline is very thin and cliché (even though I did not expected the ending it had). O and did I mention there are some sex / nude scenes in 3D? Now that is technology I am willing to pay for!

DEMIGOD is a game which is based on the popular free mod DEFENSE OF THE ANCIENTS of WARCRAFT III. Now I am really not known with this mod so I never had any real experience with it, but let me first tell you how I even came across this game.

As some of you might know, I have been a true RPG fan since the early days. I think my first RPGs were BALDUR’S GATE, PLANESCAPE TORMENT and FALLOUT. Even with these great titles I also played pen & paper RPGs like AD&D en D&D 3rd. Some time later a great game called NEVERWINTER NIGHTS came and it got me hooked. With a big community and easy modifications, it was easy to get lost in this world.
One of the popular mods this game had, was BATTLE OF THE DRAGONS. A game in which there are two teams, each of them have a base with a big ass dragon, some elite guards, some normal guards and troops. The dragon and the guards were stationary NPCs which fired their magic or arrows at you if you got too close. The troops were spawned every so often and followed 3 paths towards the enemy base.
So the principle was simple, you level up, you kill enemy troops, normal guards, elite guards and finally you kill the enemy dragon and win the round. (O and not to forget, you could upgrade troops and buy stuff at shops to improve your awesomeness)

Now some people will yell out loud: “Hey that sounds a lot like DEFENSE OF THE ANCIENTS!” and I’ll say: “Really?”. Because fact was, I never heard of it until recently when I started playing DIABLO 2 again. Some blokes were talking about a free mod of WARCRAFT III which was fast leveling, action and great short fun. With my current living style, it sounded too good to be true. So I Googled up DOTA, installed WARCRAFT III and played a few rounds.

My conclusion? Well it’s actually quite addictive, but somehow it was missing something for me and then it hit me. I was missing out on some more character development and the “feel” of being really über.

During my Googling session for DOTA I stumbled upon DEMIGOD and since then I have been following this game. When I finally got a chance to play, I was like a little kid in the candy store.

I got the game, installed, booted with Fraps in the background and tweaked the settings to low, with only the resolution on par with my widescreen. I first started with some offline play, before getting my arse whipped online. First Demigod picked? The Rook of course! I was walking around and smashing stuff, leveling like mad and won the first round. I sighed and exited the game…

This is it, this is the game I have been looking for after BATTLE OF THE DRAGONS died a silent death when NEVERWINTER NIGHTS 2 came! But there was only one problem. My system was not good enough to run it properly. As said above, my settings were all set on low, except the screen resolution. I was doing 20 FPS on average, so the game felt real slow when I was in combat.

Now I know that my system is not that good, but with the minimum specs Gas Powered Games mentioned, I assumed the game could at least run around 30-35 FPS with everything set to low. Alas, this was not for me. So I exited the game, shut down my laptop and went downstairs to play some RED FACTION: GUERILLA.

15 minutes later I came back up – no not because RED FACTION sucked – but, because I was convinced I could tweak my dying rig to play this game. After some tweaking I managed to squeeze 5 more FPS to make the game a little more playable.

Most of you are not interested in my bad laptop, but I’m trying to make a point here. With the bad system I had, I kept coming back to the game. I played with every Demigod and finished the “offline mode” of this game. This is how much I think this game has potential!

The game can be easily divided in two groups of characters you can play; an Assassin or a General. Assassins are basically one army people who can deal tons of damage, these characters play a lot like the heroes from DOTA in WARCRAFT III. The Generals are similar to the Assassins, only are a bit weaker, but can summon fairly strong units to aid him (or her). Do not underestimate those summons, because they can tear down buildings fairly easy. Note: You can play a General as if it was an Assassin, just focus your points in melee / ranged / health, instead of on your summons. Now with your Demigod you battle your way towards the enemy base and destroy it (or capture stuff, depending on the game mode you are playing), a simple concept with short and hectic games.

But I have to give everyone a fair warning before rushing out to the stores to get this game. This game indeed has potential, but it is lacking on some parts, which you have to accept if you want to enjoy this game properly.

The offline mode is pretty much bollocks. It is just a fancy version of Skirmish, so you get to know the game a bit better. Do not confuse this with a tutorial, because it’s not. Also there is no real tutorial in this game, but I believe an average gamer should understand the basics in a couple of games versus the AI on easy. The manual can help by the way and if you need to know more things the official forums are a good source of information.

I have not played multiplayer, so I am not going to give an opinion on this. What I read so far on several forums, is that the slowest player makes the entire match / round go slow. Since my laptop sucks, everyone would be slowed down to my speed, so at the moment I am not going to put anyone through this misery. (It is really annoying if you have a great rig and llamas like me are ruining your gaming experience.) This actually is something that needs fixing and the devs are aware of this. Also there are problems with the network coding and login systems, but again the devs are working on it.

Currently I am just hoping a patch will come, which will improve the performance slightly, so I can fully enjoy online play.

So worth the buy? I say yes!. I am aware that on the net the game has been circling prior to the official release date, but all those people downloading and playing it are missing a couple of things:
- The 0-day patch which contains lots of tweaks and other improvements
- Proper online fun (if they fix the network issues), with stats tracking
- Free content (they will be adding more Demigods with future patches)
The game itself can be bought fairly cheap, so do not order it from the official website. I have seen some online stores selling the game for less then 30 bucks, which is cheaper than the 40 dollars from the official site (and only is a digital copy of the game).

If you do buy this game, accept the problems it has now, knowing it will be fixed. And if you are completely new to this type of genre, fight some AI on easy to get a good sense of what you can do. If you are really in doubt, download the game to get a real good impression. The real fun of this game is multiplayer, so you’ll need to buy it for online play (and of course for the free extra Demigods you’ll get!).

3.0 GB of RAM
